Transforming Waste into Opportunity: Fair and Sustainable Consulting’s Initiative in Nyeri County

In a recent collaborative effort spearheaded by Fair and Sustainable Consulting, together with Governor H.E. Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga, a pivotal meeting was held with a delegation from Fair and Sustainable Insect Farms. This meeting marked the beginning of an innovative venture aimed at revolutionizing waste management practices in Nyeri County, Kenya.

The meeting, attended by Director Wilfried Schasfoort and Advocate Muthoni Mburu from Fair and Sustainable Insect Farms, along with key government officials including Peter Macharia, Chief Executive Committee Member for the Department of Public Waste and Solid Waste Management, Violet Koigi, Chief Officer for the Department of County Public Service and Solid Waste Management, and Lawrence Kinyua, Director of CPSM, focused on exploring sustainable solutions for organic waste transformation and solid waste management within the county.

At the heart of the discussion was the introduction of an ingenious method utilizing Black Soldier Fly (BSF) to transform organic waste into valuable resources. Fair and Sustainable Insect Farms proposed a partnership with the County Government of Nyeri through the Department of Public Waste and Solid Waste Management to implement this transformative approach.

The envisioned system involves a seamless integration of organic waste collection, sorting, and treatment with the assistance of Black Soldier Fly larvae. These larvae, once matured, will serve as nutrient-rich animal feed, benefiting local farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The collaboration doesn’t stop there. To ensure the success and scalability of the initiative, the Department of County Public Service and Solid Waste Management will collaborate closely with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Aquaculture Development. This partnership aims to facilitate the distribution of Black Soldier Fly larvae to farmers, fostering a closed-loop system where waste is transformed into valuable resources within the local agricultural ecosystem.

Nyeri County’s commitment to comprehensive solid waste management aligns perfectly with this initiative. By emphasizing proper waste segregation and handling, the county aims to create cleaner town centers while minimizing environmental degradation. This collaborative effort between the public and private sectors underscores the importance of collective action in creating a more sustainable and healthy community for generations to come.

As Fair and Sustainable Consulting continues to drive impactful projects like this across various communities, we remain committed to fostering partnerships that prioritize environmental stewardship and socioeconomic development. Together, we can transform waste into opportunity, paving the way for a brighter, greener future.
