Fair & Sustainable Insect Farms  Kenya

Transforming Waste into feed and fertilizer

F&S Insect Farms uses Black Soldier Fly larvae to transform organic waste into proteins for animal feed and rich frass fertilizer to boost agricultural production.

Black Soldier Flies contain high levels of protein and fat, and are rich in micronutrients, vitamins and essential amino acids; hence, they are considered an excellent replacement of soja and fishmeal in pig, poultry and fish feed. BSF production has a small ecological footprint, and contributes to a circular economy through the recycling of organic waste that traditionally ends up in landfills, into organic fertilizer. By using local waste sources and selling our products locally we reduce transport costs and carbon emissions.

We started our pilot farm in 2020 in Eldoret, with Everlyne Nekesa Songoi as the entrepreneur (see below) and we learned valuable lessons on the technical and managerial aspects of running a Black Soldier Fly farm. Now, more than three years later we are ready to scale up, expand our current farm and establish new BSF farms in other parts of Kenya and in the region.

In the process of building our knowledge we carried out studies and projects with a.o. Icipe, FAO, DanChurchAid, Netherlands Embassy, NFP, which helped us to understand the sector and its challenges. We have developed a strong network in the sector and are willing to partner and exchange with all who are willing to exchange, because we believe that will take us further.

As a social enterprise we only work with young people on our farms, as entrepreneurs and as employees. Our target is that 75% of the staff are women. Considering that youth unemployment rates in Kenya stands at 35%, and for women even at 50%, we therefore offer opportunities to young people that usually do not have a chance to find a decent job.
